Background of the Study
Sustainable fishing practices are essential for preserving aquatic ecosystems and ensuring that fishing activities can continue to support the livelihoods of communities dependent on fisheries. In Yauri Local Government Area (LGA) of Kebbi State, fishing is a major economic activity for many households, with the Yauri River being a key water source. However, overfishing, the use of destructive fishing techniques, and environmental changes are threatening the sustainability of the local fisheries. This study aims to evaluate the extent to which sustainable fishing practices are being implemented in Yauri and their effectiveness in promoting long-term fish stock conservation and improving the socio-economic conditions of local fishing communities (Sani & Musa, 2024).
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Fishing in Yauri LGA has been negatively impacted by unsustainable practices, such as the use of harmful fishing nets and overfishing. These practices have led to a decline in fish stocks, which has affected the income and food security of local communities. Despite the growing awareness of the need for sustainable practices, the implementation of such measures remains limited. This study will examine the extent of sustainable fishing practices in Yauri and evaluate their impact on both the environment and the livelihoods of local fishermen.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
• To evaluate the extent of sustainable fishing practices implemented by fishermen in Yauri LGA.
• To assess the effectiveness of sustainable fishing practices in preserving fish stocks and improving the livelihoods of fishing communities.
• To recommend strategies for enhancing the adoption of sustainable fishing practices in Yauri LGA.
1.4 Research Questions
• What sustainable fishing practices are being implemented in Yauri LGA?
• How effective are these practices in preserving fish stocks and supporting the livelihoods of local fishing communities?
• What barriers exist to the widespread adoption of sustainable fishing practices in Yauri?
1.5 Research Hypothesis
• H1: Sustainable fishing practices in Yauri LGA have a positive impact on the conservation of fish stocks.
• H2: The adoption of sustainable fishing practices has improved the socio-economic conditions of local fishing communities in Yauri.
• H3: Barriers such as lack of awareness, insufficient enforcement, and traditional fishing practices hinder the widespread adoption of sustainable fishing techniques.
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study will provide valuable insights into the state of sustainable fishing practices in Yauri and their effectiveness in protecting aquatic ecosystems and improving the livelihoods of fishing communities. The findings will contribute to the development of policies and programs aimed at promoting sustainable fishing in Kebbi State and similar regions, ensuring that fisheries continue to provide a sustainable source of income and food for local populations (Sani & Musa, 2024).
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on the fishing practices in Yauri LGA, evaluating their environmental and socio-economic impacts. It will assess both sustainable and unsustainable fishing methods and their effects on local fisheries. Limitations may include difficulties in obtaining data from fishermen due to seasonal variations in fishing activities and challenges in measuring the long-term effects of fishing practices on fish stocks.
1.8 Operational Definition of Terms
• Sustainable Fishing Practices: Fishing methods that ensure the long-term health of fish populations and aquatic ecosystems, such as the use of selective fishing gear and the prevention of overfishing.
• Fish Stocks: The population of fish species in a particular body of water that is available for capture.
• Socio-Economic Conditions: The social and economic well-being of individuals and communities, including income, employment, and access to resources.
